Raceway Park... Excitement, Drag Racing & More!!
The Thrillseeker's #1 Destination!!
Each year, starting the final weekend of February and ending the Sunday prior to Thanksgiving, Old Bridge Township Raceway Park presents a
full schedule
of drag racing excitement. Since opening in 1965, and then hosting the
prestigious NHRA National Event beginning in 1968, our New Jersey motorsports park has become known by drivers and racing enthusiasts across the country as one of the most thrilling drag racing venues in the world, boasting the finest in timing and track maintenance equipment, and continuous record-setting performances.
The sport of drag racing is an acceleration contest between two vehicles racing from a standing start over a straight quarter- or eighth-mile strip. A series of individual two-vehicle races called eliminations make up a drag racing event, with competing vehicles divided into a variety of
classes
. Class eligibility is determined by several factors, including engine size, type of fuel, vehicle weight, allowable modifications, and aerodynamics.
Virtually anyone can compete in drag racing at Englishtown’s Raceway Park with some stipulations. Drivers must be capable of operating the vehicle safely and must have a valid state- or government-issued driver’s license beyond a learner’s-permit level. In some cases, a driver must possess an NHRA competition license. Most street vehicles must meet basic safety criteria, while faster, high-performance racecars must meet more stringent requirements as outlined throughout the NHRA Rulebook.
Raceway Park offers a varied drag racing schedule that features more than 200 classes of vehicles in competition, accommodating every level of racecar driver, from streetcar amateurs to professionals. Most of the season's events at Raceway Park are geared to the non-professional racer and weekend thrillseekers. Annually, fans can see the professional drivers who tour the US in their quest for an NHRA world championship. The NHRA Supernationals, held each June, features four professional categories including Top Fuel dragster, Funny Cars, Pro Stock, and Pro Stock Motorcycle. These four, along with Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car feature a single class of vehicle in heads-up competition. The remaining categories — Comp, Super Stock, and Stock — and the three "Super" classes Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street, are comprised of a variety of
classes
and use a handicap system to equalize competition.
